Product information "The Democracy of Photography"

Product description:

Searching for moments while always working on the periphery, award winning photojournalist, Kieran Doherty’s photographs celebrate telling the story from the vantage point of the everyman. As a working photojournalist, he has taken his rangefinder into every imaginable situation, from war zones to the Wimbledon championships, from the Mongolian desert to the Arctic circle, from the fashion catwalks to a small British high street. Always looking to tell the story of the ordinary. This workshop will let you see how exciting the ordinary is. It will show you how to take an ordinary moment and turn it into a complex and layered photograph which in turn will become the foundation for the story you want to tell. Whether it is a photo story, a photo essay or a single image that you wish to create you will be given complete freedom to release the shackles and boldly explore, visualise and develop your palette for colour, light, empathy, space and geometry. You will learn how to become your own fiercest critic and recognise that the playing field of photography has never before been so democratic.

About Kieran:

Kieran’s career started in 1993 working as staff for the Reuters News Service in London during which time he covered every major world story including the Iraq war, the Asian tsunami and the Northern Ireland Troubles. In 2008 he resigned his staff position to concentrate on longer term stories. In 2010 Kieran was invited to join the BBC Natural History Unit’s cinematography team to specifically create a stills time lapse film for the Urban show from their ground breaking BAFTA winning series Human Planet. The show went on to win the Emmy award for best factual cinematography.

In 2015 his personal take on the Wimbledon Tennis Championships won first place at the World Press Photo awards and in 2017 his two year photo story chronicling the Wootton Bassett Afghan war repatriations was acquired by London’s Imperial War Museum for their Contemporary War Photography collection. Kieran’s work also resides in private collections as well as the permanent art collections of the Royal Household and the Houses of Westminster. Kieran’s work has exhibited in London, New York and Perpignan, appeared in magazines such as National Geographic, Time, Newsweek and Rolling Stone and he is regularly commissioned by clients such as BMW, Barclays and Oxfam to lend his documentary style to their campaigns.
